- Oscar Wilde
Dear friend (whoever you are),
Do you think this quote is true? Do you really believe we are most ourselves when we aren’t?
Think about it, Dear Friend, sometimes people get “trapped” in expectations and in images and mirages they set up for people to see. Sometimes people try to fit themselves into something they aren’t and can’t break out. But why can’t they break out, Dear Friend?
People are often sometimes scared to be themselves. They don’t want people to judge them, or think bad about them, or say mean things about them. Because really, people are mean.
But with a mask, Dear Friend, some people can be themselves. When people don’t already know you, it’s the perfect time to “start over” and be your real self. And these people, who never knew you without your mask, can’t judge you like the others can or would. Then again, they still might. But at least you were really yourself, at least you tried.
Dear Friend, are you really yourself? Or are you just pretending to be you for fear of what others might say?
Dr. Seuss has some words for you:
- Dr. Seuss
I love this quote. Be yourself and say what you really think. Because the people that will judge you, they don’t matter, they -shouldn’t – matter, their opinion means nothing. And the people who’s opinions count, they will accept you for who you are.
Now Dear Friend, maybe you really are yourself, maybe you’ve never pretended. And I applaud you for that (and greatly admire). I tried to avoid saying things like “all people” and making assumptions, because all people are different. And I’m sure you, my Dear Friend, are very different than me. But I hope I gave you something to think about.
Until next time,
